Understanding the Pinterest Algorithm is Key

how does the pinterest algorithm work?

To understand why these tips will help you be successful, it helps to know how Pinterest determines what content people see as a result of the Pinterest algorithm. Keep in mind that your feed algorithm works differently than your search algorithm, but the basics are mostly the same!

Relevance to the Query

One of the biggest mistakes people make is not using Pinterest-specific keywords in their strategy. Most discovery on Pinterest happens through search. Pinners start with an initial query that provides them with results. The Pinterest algorithm will show results based on how well they relate to the search. This is done in various ways, including the Pin’s related keywords and where it gets saved. This is why understanding keywords is essential to Pinterest success!

Quality of the Content

The algorithm uses information like engagement metrics, Pin quality, and website quality to decide what to share with Pinners. The more often someone takes action on your Pin, the more it will be shared in search and home feeds. That also means that Pins with low-quality creative, watermarks from other platforms, or links to “spammy” websites won’t be shared as regularly.

Pinner Quality

Taking consistent action on Pinterest, whether posting your own content or engaging with other content, will help the rest of your Pins get a boost. Taking the time to like, comment, and save great content will help your content be seen more frequently. It isn’t enough to simply log in to Pinterest a couple of times a month to post content and leave. Try to use Pinterest like a Pinner, curating content your audience will love and supporting other creators.

5 Easy Steps to Grow Your Followers on Pinterest

No matter how often you plan to post, these 5 easy tips will help you make the most of the Pinterest algorithm to boost your reach.

Pinterest like a pro: research keywords like it's your job

Tip #1: Make the Most of Keywords

Keywords are one of the most important ways that Pinterest determines how it will share content with Pinners. If you want your content to show up in searches, it’s important to be intentional with the keywords you choose to use! Keywords can go in your Pin title, description, on your Pin creative, your board titles, and your board descriptions.  Before you post, it’s helpful to do some keyword research. That way, you can ensure that your content is properly indexed so that when someone goes looking for an idea you’ve shared, it will show up!
post video pins weekly. we recommend starting with 1 idea pin per week

Tip #2: Use Idea Pins Strategically and Consistently

All Pins on Pinterest have to be indexed (or categorized) before they can show up in search. However, Idea Pins are pushed out to more people as they scroll through the Watch tab, so sharing this type of content can help you find your audience more quickly. Remember that Pinterest content should be unique and engaging, so it’s the perfect format for DIY’s, product reviews, recipes, projects, trip planning, etc.

To get the most from Idea Pins, Pinterest recommends posting a minimum of 1/week and posting them on the same day each week. If you can do more, great! Just make sure you can remain consistent and remember to use those keywords.

post new static pins 2x per month

Tip #3: Post Static Pins Regularly

Static Pins are photo/graphic Pins that link to a URL. At a minimum, aim to create at least 2 static Pins each month that you’ve never shared on Pinterest before. It’s best to spread static Pins out as much as possible, so sharing one new static Pin every other week is a good cadence if you only share the minimum number.

Each URL should link to your content, ideally to a website you’ve claimed. See the section below for more info about this! Make sure your images are optimized for Pinterest.

The key here is that the URLs are NEW to Pinterest, meaning you’ve never Pinned them. Brand new content shared on Pinterest regularly is the best way to increase your reach.

Tip #4: Use the Trends Tool to Help You Plan Ahead

Pinners are planners! Seasonal content starts WAY earlier on Pinterest and tends to last longer, too. If seasonality is an important part of your brand, the Pinterest Trends tool is about to change your life.

Since Pinterest is more of a search engine than a social media platform, planning ahead is essential. As we already mentioned, Pins need time to index. If you wait to post right before a big moment, you might miss it because your content won’t show up in searches until they’ve been indexed! Plus, Pinners have likely already been planning for months!

Take this as an example. If you’re planning a bachelorette party, you’re likely not going to wait until a couple of weeks before the party to figure out where to stay, your itinerary, the decor, etc. That process is a months-long journey! More likely, Pinners will START their planning on Pinterest and use the ideas they find to guide the actions they take, including purchases, outfits, and more.

In other words, if you wait until it’s time, it’s already too late!

The Trends Tool can help with this. It tracks growing and seasonal trends of keyword searches on Pinterest. Using this tool can help you figure out the best time to post seasonal content and get ideas for keywords. We personally love to use it to help us come up with inspiring content ideas for other platforms, too.

build your community by following Pinners and engaging with content weekly

Tip #5: Engage with Pinterest Content Regularly

Remember the algorithm? It gives you a boost if you are engaging with the platform regularly, regardless of how much you’re posting. Even if you aren’t putting a ton of content on Pinterest, simply getting on the platform for a specific amount of time every day (even just 10 minutes!) can help boost your “Pinner Quality,” helping you boost your own content in the process.   Hint hint – when wave takes over your Pinterest account for you, one of the things we do is take over platform engagement, so all you have to do is share your amazing content with the world.

Tips to Get Even More Out of Pinterest

Are you an overachiever like us? We see you, babe. If you want to really rock it on Pinterest, take it to the next level with these bonus tips!

Claim Your Website and Optimize It to be Pinterest Friendly

If you already have a website, claiming it on Pinterest is the EASIEST way to boost your reach. Having a claimed website gets you:

  1. Access to analytics: this will tell you what Pins are performing well to help you know what people want to see more of.
  2. Ability to see what people are already Pinning from your site: anything that links back to your site, whether you made it or not, will show up in your analytics data.
  3. More visibility on the platform: regardless of who Pins the content, if someone links back to your site on Pinterest, your profile picture and a follow button will show up on that content so Pinners know where to get more of that content.

Pinterest also prefers content from claimed websites, so you’ll get a boost simply for completing this step. Check out this guide from Pinterest to get all the info you need to claim!

Cross-Promote with Other Platforms

You’re going to laugh at how easy this one is. Share your Pinterest profile with your followers.

Your Pinterest boards can add soooo much value to your engaged audience! They’ll love to see what inspired you so they can incorporate your ideas into their own lives.

A great example of someone who is absolutely killing it with this is Clara Pierce. Clara is a lifestyle creator who makes content for Instagram and TikTok. She uses Pinterest to share her own content, as well as collect ideas she wants to try or recipes she loves.

When a follower on IG asks for a recipe she found from Pinterest, she shares her recipe board URL, leading to a ton of extra engagement on her profile as a whole, even though she doesn’t create all the content herself! Easiest win ever.

Go Live with Pinterest TV

Live on Pinterest is built different.

First of all, when you go live on Pinterest, you are the ONLY creator live at that time. There are lots of monetization options for Live content as well, so get creative about how you can share your own unique viewpoint along with products you love to help inspire the Pinterest audience.

Pinterest TV participants often see massive audience growth, and some have even landed paid campaigns as a result of successful episodes.

Need some ideas? You could do an episode about:

  • Your favorite finds, like date night outfits or makeup you love
  • An engaging experience, like a yoga class or a live performance
  • A teachable moment, like a recipe or a craft
  • Live events, like a cool experience or a special moment

Whatever it is you love to share has a place on Pinterest TV. Learn more about them here and apply to create an episode!
